Certain special timeslot bus that goes back to Takayama requires a reserved seat booking (no need to pay extra $$, as long as you already have a return trip ticket), so you may do your seat booking here at the tourist information counter.

That's the bus we took

  2. Hello. My name is Jen Nee.

I am planning a trip to Takayama and Shirakawa-go. May I ask your opinion if worth these two places worth travelling to?

How long do you need to spend at Shirakawa-go village and Takayama city?

    Thank you

    1. Which season are you planning to visit Takayama and Shirakawa-go?
Takayama's old town is just a small area, can explore in a few hours and maybe have lunch there.
Shirakawa-go, well, I spent about 2-3hrs, but I felt it was too rushed, so I would advise you to cater at least 3hrs for Shirakawa-go.

Bear in mind though, both Shirakawa-go and Takayama are small villages and are not cities, so the shops there usually close really early.
Shirakawago is a pretty picturesque village, but it can be quite a hassle to reach there since it's an additional 50mins bus ride from Takayama station. But, I didn't regret visiting both places.
